SAN DIEGO - A rare early eruption from the San Diego State baseball team helped the Aztecs cruise to a 10-5 victory over the University of San Diego on Tuesday at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
With the win, SDSU improved to 27-17 overall on the year, while USD fell to 30-15.
The Aztecs scored runs in each of the first four innings, highlighted by a four-run second inning and a three run third to put the game away early. Already up, 3-2 in the second inning, SDSU let fielder Andy Litteral roped a two-RBI double, scoring shortstop Taber Lee and third baseman Pilar Amaya.
Things continued to go SDSU's way in the third, as the Aztecs got an RBI double from Amaya that scored first baseman Cody Haven, then center fielder Rah-Miel Mitchell drove in two more with a single to left.
Right-hander John Skinner improved his record to 3-2 for the Aztecs, throwing three innings of scoreless two-hit ball out of the bullpen. Torero starter Tony Perez suffered the loss, dropping to 1-1 on the year after allowing five runs (four earned) in 1 2/3 innings of work.
Five different SDSU players banged out two hits in the game, with designated hitter Jake Minter leading the balanced attack with a 2-for-3 effort, a double, two RBI and two runs scored.
The Aztecs return to Mountain West Conference action this weekend when they travel to Provo, Utah for a three-game series with Brigham Young beginning on Thursday. All three games can be heard live on the official website of SDSU athletics, www.goaztecs.com with Alan Horton calling the action.
