SAN DIEGO - The 46th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team enters next week's Mountain West Conference championship with the momentum of an eight-match win streak with them. The Aztecs finished the regular-season 15-7 following a, 4-3, victory over Oregon Sunday at the SDSU Tennis Courts.
The scarlet and black again came on strong early in the match sweeping the doubles point. The Aztec pairs of Lindsey Hedberg and Silvia Tornier (No. 1), Whitney Wells and Julie Chidley (No. 2) and Katja Karrento and Katey Becker (No. 3) all posted wins.
SDSU's Hedberg made the score 2-0 with a, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, win at No. 1 singles. An Oregon (5-15) win at No. 2 singles stopped the Aztecs' momentum slightly but SDSU wins at No. 3 by Whitney Wells and No. 4 by Katja Karrento sealed the win.
Oregon scored wins at the No. 5 and 6 spots, but its was too little, too late.
Wells', 6-1, 6-2, win in singles not only served as the turning point in the match but gave her a win in her last home match. She is the Aztecs' lone senior this season.
The league championship will be held April 26-28 in Ft. Collins, Colo., on the Colorado State campus. SDSU enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed and faces No. 7 seed Air Force at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
