Aztec Softball Swept By Colorado State

April 15, 2001

The San Diego State softball team finished its weekend road trip on a sour note, getting swept by the last place Colorado State Rams Sunday afternoon at Ram Field. The Rams won the first game 2-0, and used a three run sixth inning to pull out a 5-2 victory in the second game.

In the first game, Colorado State (6-29, 3-6 MWC) got on the board early as a Jennie Orozco single scored Holly Schmillen from second base to make the score 1-0 after one inning. The Rams added an insurance run in the sixth when Angie Kitchen crossed the plate on an Arica Heisel sacrifice fly out to right field.

The Aztecs (27-19, 3-5 MWC) played the Rams tough in the second game, but couldn't hold on for the victory.

Holly Schmillen blasted a two run home run off of Sandra Durazo in the first inning to put Colorado State on top.

The Aztecs answered back with one run in the second inning, as Summer Ehrsam singled to left field, scoring Janna Kovensky.

San Diego State tied the game in the fourth when Ehrsam drove in Shannon Flynn with a single to center. Ehrsam went 2-for-3 in the game with two RBI.

An RBI double by Katie Benton started Colorado State's three run sixth. Amanda Kocis scored on the play. Jennie Orozco scored on a single by Angie Kitchen making the score 5-3. Katie Benton scored the final run of the game on an Arica Heisel ground out to second base.

San Diego State returns to action on Saturday, April 21 with a conference doubleheader against the UNLV Rebels. Game time at SDSU Field is set for 1 p.m.
