SAN DIEGO - Left fielder Andy Litteral singled in Anthony Gwynn in the bottom of the 10th inning to help the San Diego State baseball team complete its three-game series sweep of Utah with a 6-5 win at Tony Gwynn Stadium on Sunday.
The Aztecs (19-12, 8-4 Mountain West Conference) trailed for much of the game, but a two-run single by first baseman Rielly Embrey (Poway HS) in the bottom of the eighth gave SDSU its first lead at 5-4. Closer Royce Ring (Monte Vista HS) came on in the ninth and gave up an RBI single to Utah's Sam Swenson that sent the game into extra innings.
Gwynn (Poway HS) led off the 10th with a single to left. He then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Ute catcher Chris Shelton. Litteral ended the game when he roped a single to right, scoring Gwynn.
Seven different Aztec pitchers saw action, but left-handed reliever Mike Garber picked up the win by retiring the only batter he faced in the top of the 10th. The SDSU pitchers combined to strike out 12 Utah batters in the contest, led by starter Marcos Mendoza, who fanned seven in six innings.
SDSU is in sole possession of first place in the Mountain West Conference standings, one game ahead of Brigham Young.
The Aztecs return to action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday when they host 10th-ranked Southern California at Tony Gwynn Stadium
