Aztecs Continue Eight-Game Homestand with Pivotal Doubleheaders Against Utah and BYU San Diego State, winners of five of its last six games and 12 of the last 16 contests, host the two teams atop the Mountain West Conference standings on Friday and Saturday at SDSU Field. The Aztecs play host to 2000 Mountain West Conference champion Utah on Friday afternoon. The Utes, a preseason top 25 team, are 22-15-1 overall and have grabbed the early MWC lead this season by posting a 3-0-1 league record. On Saturday, the Aztecs entertain a Brigham Young team that has won eight of its last nine games and is currently in second place in the conference with a 2-1 record. The Cougars are 19-16 overall. San Diego State is 24-14 overall, having posted a 12-4 record since March 16. The Aztecs are 1-1 in league play after splitting the conference-opening series at UNLV last weekend. San Diego State, which is 13-5 in home games, including a 10-2 mark at SDSU Field this season, has won five consecutive home games, outscoring its opponents by a 20-5 margin during that stretch. Included is a 4-1 victory over sixth-ranked and defending national champion Oklahoma. The Aztecs have won 13 consecutive games against unranked teams at SDSU Field. Following the action this weekend, the Aztecs will conclude the eight-game homestand with a doubleheader against St. Mary's on Wednesday afternoon. Game time is set for 1 p.m.

Durazo Earns Third POW Award of the Season San Diego State right-handed pitcher Sandra Durazo was named the Mountain West Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week for the period ending April 1. Durazo, who earned the award three times last season, is the first conference player to be a three-time recipient of the honor this year. The senior from Granda Hills, Calif., posted a 4-1 record with a 1.14 ERA as the Aztecs went 5-1 last week. Durazo completed all three games in which she started, pitching a shutout against Cal Poly and registering complete-game victories over UNLV and Santa Clara. She also pitched two shutout innings in relief in the Aztecs 3-2, eight-inning victory over Cal Poly. Durazo struck out 13 batters in 24.2 innings of work last week. Durazo is 13-7 on the season with a 1.54 earned run average. She currently ranks among the top four in the Mountain West Conference in victories, earned run average, innings pitched and strikeouts. The all-time school leader in victories, Durazo has 70 career wins.

Aztecs Sweep Santa Clara 4-1 and 2-1 The San Diego State softball team swept its doubleheader with Santa Clara Sunday at the SDSU Softball Field. The Aztecs won game one, 4-1, and game two, 2-1. San Diego State (24-14, 1-1 MWC) jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first in game one when a Sarah Hershman single to center field allowed Kellie Nordhagen to score from second. The Aztecs would add another run in the bottom of the second with a Summer Ehrsam single to left advancing Brooke Johnson from second. Santa Clara (11-23) would come within a run in the top of the fourth when a Coresta Salas single to first base allowed Lindsey Braff to score from third. But the Broncos attack would stop there and the Aztecs' two insurance scores in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 4-1, would put things out of reach. Sandra Durazo (13-7) picked up the win allowing eight hits in seven innings. Game two provided better defense by the Broncos who held the Aztecs scoreless through six innings. Santa Clara was the first to score taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth. SDSU would get the win in the bottom of the seventh in dramatic fashion. Joann Figueroa came in to pinch hit for Vanessa Villegas and advanced herself to first on a bunt. She would move to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ehrsam. Nordhagen came to the plate and singled to second moving Figueroa to third and bringing up Hershman with only one out. She was walked, allowing the tying run (Figueroa) to score. Santa Clara walked the next batter, Shannon Flynn, as well. A single by Tiffany Goudy to center brought Hershman home and gave the Aztecs the win. Tiffany Goudy (3-2) pick up her third win of the year allowing only one hit in seven innings pitched. SDSU 4, Santa Clara 1 SCU 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 - 1 8 1 SDSU 1 1 0 0 2 0 x - 4 10 0 Win - Durazo (13-7).
