San Diego State Softball Splits Twinbill with Defending Conference Champs

April 6, 2001

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team came within one out of sweeping the defending conference champion at SDSU Field on Friday afternoon. After defeating Utah 7-1 in the first game, the Aztecs led 3-1 before the Utes rallied for five runs in the seventh inning to claim a 6-3 victory and a split of the doubleheader.

In the first game, Aztec senior Sandra Durazo, who earned her third conference player of the week honor this season on Tuesday, pitched a complete game to improve to 14-7 on the season. A native of Granada Hills, Calif., Durazo scattered six hits and did not issue a walk in the contest.

She got all the offensive help she would need from freshman center fielder Janna Kovensky. Kovensky, who went 5-for-5 on the afternoon, was 3-for-3 in the first contest with two runs scored and two RBI for the Aztecs.

The Aztecs were in good position to record a sweep, taking a 3-1 lead to the seventh inning of the second game. With two outs, left fielder Amberly Jeppson reached on an infield single to score Masie Ota from third to cut the Aztec lead to 3-2. Third baseman Lyndsey Trevis then doubled down the left field line, scoring Molly McLean and Jeppson to put the Utes on top 4-3.

One batter later Melissa Stahnke completed a 3-for-4 game with her 13th home run of the season. The seventh inning rally made a winner out of Kristin Arbogast, who started and completed both games of the doubleheader for the Utes.

San Diego State, winners of 13 of its last 18 contests, is 25-15 overall and 2-2 in Mountain West play, while Utah moves to 23-16-1 overall and 4-1-1 in league play. The Aztecs are back in action tomorrow when San Diego State plays host to Brigham Young. Game time at SDSU Field is set for 1 p.m.
