SAN DIEGO - San Diego State put a blemish on Brigham Young pitcher Nate Fernley's flawless record in 2001, handing the Cougar ace his first loss of the year after beating BYU, 7-5 on Friday.

SDSU designated hitter Sean Pierce made his return from the injured list in a big way, blasting two home runs off Fernley, who fell to 6-1 on the year. Third baseman Pilar Amaya also took Fernley out of the park, marking the first time all season that the Aztecs hit multiple home runs in a game.

Aztec reliever Mike Garber picked up the win after recording one out in the bottom of the seventh.

Cougar head coach Vance Law was ejected from the game in the bottom of the fourth inning for arguing a play at second base in which BYU shortstop Seth King was called for fielder's interference.

Game two of the doubleheader was suspended in the top of the eighth inning after rain forced the Aztecs to pull the tarp over the field. The game will resume on Saturday with the Cougars leading, 5-4 in the top of the eighth.
