LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The 66th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team started the Mountain West Conference portion of its schedule off on the wrong foot Friday, losing 4-3, to 36th-ranked Brigham Young (9-7, 4-0 MWC) at UNLV's Fertitta Tennis Complex.
After BYU won the doubles point, 2-1, as well as the first two singles matches SDSU (6-7, 0-1 MWC) attempted to turn the tide with Lindsey Hedberg's, 6-4, 7-5, victory over Brooke Ferney in No. 3 singles. Hedberg has won four consecutive singles matches including three at the No. 3 spot.
Hedberg's win was for naught with the Cougars' Lu Oswald clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3, win over SDSU's Katja Karrento at the No. 4 position. SDSU closed out the afternoon with wins by Katey Becker and Julie Chidley in No. 5 and 6 singles.
The Aztecs will spend the remainder of the weekend in Las Vegas with two more conference matches ahead of them. The team faces Utah on Saturday and UNLV Sunday. Both matches start at 10 a.m.
