March 27, 2001

EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 41 San Diego State men's golf team won the Oregon Duck Invitational by one stroke, shooting an 871, Tuesday, at the Eugene Country Club.

SDSU scored a three-round total of 871 (293-283-295), one stroke better than No. 37 Washington (872), to win the 17-team tournament. The Aztecs came in above four nationally ranked teams: No. 11 Arizona State, No. 30 Oregon, No. 37 Washington and No. 43 UCLA.

Three Aztecs finished in the top ten among 92 competitors. SDSU was led by junior John Lepak, placing third with a 214 (74-70-70). Sophomore John Lieber scored a 215 (70-72-73), good for fifth. Freshman Mark Warman competed as an individual and finished seventh with a 218 (76-72-70). Jeff Wood of UC Santa Barbara won the individual honors with a 210.

"We played very well in a highly competitive field," said head coach Dale Walker. "Especially for a team from Southern California playing in the cold, wind and rain of the Northwest."

The Aztecs are back in action next week, April 2-3, at the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz.
