San Diego - The New Mexico Lobos broke open a 3-3 deadlock with a six-run eighth inning and went on to defeat San Diego State, 9-3, in Albuquerque Sunday afternoon.
The loss dropped the Aztecs to 16-11 on the year and 5-4 in the Mountain West Conference. They find themselves in a tie for second in the league standings with Brigham Young (5-4) as Utah sits in first at 6-3. With the victory, the Lobos upped their record to 14-21 and are now 4-5 in league play.
San Diego State had tied the game at 3-3 just one inning before the Lobo's outburst, as Pilar Amaya's single scored Sean Pierce and Andy Litteral in he top of the seventh. However, UNM sent 11 men to the plate in the next inning, scoring five runs off senior Ben Julianel (1-3) who suffered his third loss of the season. New Mexico's James Vermilyea (3-0) picked up the win after coming on in the top of the eighth.
Amaya finished the game with a pair of hits while outfielder Andy Litteral also had two hits on the day including a double. The duo accounted for four of the Aztecs' seven hits.
