San Diego - San Diego State extended its current win streak to five a games as it defeated Loyola Marymount, 11-3, in a game played in Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon. It was the Aztecs' second triumph over the Lions in a week as they bested LMU 6-5 at Tony Gwynn Stadium on March 13. The win improved SDSU's record to 15-9 on the year while Loyola Marymount fell to 12-16 as it suffered its sixth straight loss.
The Lions took a 2-0 lead with runs in the third and fourth innings, scoring single markers against SDSU starter Mike Moat and reliever Ben Julianel. However, Julianel (1-2) was the beneficiary of a seven-run Aztec uprising in the sixth inning which allowed him to record his first win of the year.
In the sixth, one-out singles by Chad Redfern, Jacob Minter and Garrett Cook loaded the bases. Pilar Amaya's sacrifice fly was followed by a walk to Brian Manfred to re-load the bases with two outs. Taber Lee then hit a two-run double and Anthony Gwynn followed with a two-RBI triple.
Gwynn would score later in the inning on a wild pitch, and Carlo Cota, who reached on a single and stole second base, would score on Andy Litteral's pinch-hit single. SDSU sent 11 men to the plate and effectively put the game out of reach.
San Diego State would add a single run in the eighth and three more in the ninth before LMU got a consolation run in the bottom of the ninth off reliever Royce Ring. The Lion's Justin Abreu (0-2) took the loss, his second of the season and second at the hands of the Aztecs in a week.
Lee, whose 13-game hitting streak was snapped in Sunday's contest at UNLV, had a pair of hits and three RBIs while Gwynn also drove in three runs on the day.
San Diego State continues road action this weekend when it travels to Albuquerque for a three-game Mountain West Conference series with New Mexico. The Lobos and Aztecs will meet Friday and Saturday (Mar. 23-24) at 7:00 p.m. (MST) with the series finale set for Sunday (Mar. 25) at 1:00 p.m. (MST)
