Baseball Completes Sweep Of UNLV

San Diego State completed a three-game sweep of conference rival UNLV with a 9-2 win over the Rebels at Earl Wilson Stadium in Las Vegas Sunday afternoon.

The win improved the Aztecs' to 14-9 on the season and moved them into a tie for first place at 4-2 in league play. The Rebels fall to 11-15 overall and 3-3 in MWC action.

The final score of the contest was deceiving as SDSU broke open a tight 3-2 contest with six runs in the ninth inning when they sent 11 men to the plate. Third baseman Pilar Amaya had a pair of singles in the inning, the second scoring the final two runs of the game. The junior from nearby Point Loma High and Southwestern JC finished the day with four hits including a double and three runs batted in. In addition, outfielder Chad Redfern had a pair of hits with a double and two RBIs.

Marcos Mendoza picked up the win to improve to 2-3 on the year. He struck out 11 and gave up two runs (one earned) in his 6.1 innings of work. Sophomore Royce Ring picked up his third save of the season after coming on in the eighth inning to protect SDSU's narrow one-run lead.

UNLV starter Ryan Olson (0-1), who dominated San Diego State in three appearances during the 2000 season, suffered his first loss of the season. The junior lefty went four innings and was touched up for three runs on six hits.

Up next for the Aztecs is a trip to Loyola Marymount on Tuesday (Mar. 20) to face the Lions at 2:00 p.m.
