SAN DIEGO - Consistent run production from the Brigham Young baseball team helped the Cougars to an 8-5 win over San Diego State at Tony Gwynn Stadium on Saturday.
BYU (12-10 overall, 4-2 Mountain West Conference) scored two runs in the second inning, added a run in both the third and the fourth and scored two more in the fifth and the sixth to power themselves past an Aztec team that outhit them, 14-8.
SDSU (10-9 overall, 1-2 MWC) had its chances to take the lead, but left 13 runners on base throughout the course of the game. Five different Aztecs turned in multi-hit efforts, led by shortstop Taber Lee's 3-for-5 showing, but four Cougar relievers combined to hold SDSU scoreless for the final 2 1/3 innings of the ballgame.
Aztec relievers Mike Moat and Royce Ring also turned in solid performances, holding BYU without a run for four innings. However, by the time they entered the game, the damage had been done.
Cougar right fielder Matt Carson and designated hitter Jeff Hiestand both hit home runs in the game, with Carson leading the way with a 2-for-3 showing with two runs batted in and two runs scored.
Prior to the start of the game, BYU and SDSU played the final two innings of their game that was suspended by rain yesterday. The game was resumed with the Cougars holding a 5-4 advantage over the Aztecs. BYU held on to keep SDSU scoreless for the two innings and claim the win.
The Aztecs return to action on Tuesday when they host Loyola Marymount at 6 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
