Sixth-seeded San Diego State (14-13 overall/4-10 Mountain West Conference), which claimed its second winning regular season since the 1984-85 campaign with one of the nation's dramatic turnarounds, will play third-seeded Wyoming (19-8/10-4) for the second time in eight days in the first round of the 2001 EAS Mountain West Conference Tournament on Thursday. The game will be televised live by ESPN+Plus and will be broadcast on KPOP-AM 1360 (San Diego) and available on the internet via www.goaztecs.com.

The Aztecs enter the tournament having won three of their last four conference tilts, after going 1-23 in their first 24 Mountain West Conference games. San Diego State has won three of four league games for the first time since 1998.

San Diego State's opponent in the quarterfinals is Wyoming. The Cowboys held their conference title hopes in their hands, but lost to UNLV, 106-102 on Saturday night to fall into a three-way tie for the regular-season title and subsequently earning the third seed.

The Cowboys lead the series 28-18, having won four straight games between the teams. Wyoming handed San Diego State its most-lopsided loss of the year, a 101-66 defeat in Laramie, Wyo., on Feb. 3. Last Thursday, the Cowboys became one of just five opposing teams to claim victory in Cox Arena this season with a 69-62 win over the Aztecs.

As previously noted, the Aztecs won for the third time in four outings on with a 78-73 victory over Colorado State on Saturday. The 14 victories this season for the Aztecs are five more than they recorded when they went 9-45 the last two seasons combined, and it equals the total number of victories for San Diego State in the 66 games prior to this season when the Aztecs went 14-52.

San Diego State Sends Seniors Out In Style, with 78-73 Victory over Colorado State in Cox Arena Finale

San Diego State sent seniors Marcelo Correa and Michael Marion off in style, defeating Colorado State 78-73 on Saturday night at Cox Arena. The contest was the home finale for the Aztecs which capped a 12-5 record at Cox this season by avenging a 21-point loss to the Rams on Feb. 5.

Junior guard Al Faux scored 18 points and junior forward Randy Holcomb added 17 as the Aztecs shot 61.0 percent from the field in the victory. Freshman forward Chris Walton came off the bench to contribute a career-high 13 points and junior guard David Abramowitz added 10 as four Aztec players scored in double figures.

Although it was a one possession game until the final 10 seconds, the Aztecs led the final 33 minutes of the contest.

The Aztecs used an 18-5 run midway through the first half to build their biggest lead of the game, a 28-15 advantage. Colorado State chipped away at the lead the remainder of the first half and San Diego State led at intermission 35-30.

San Diego State led the entire second half but never by more than nine points. The Aztecs made their last 11 free throws - all coming in the game's final minute to secure the victory.

Wrapping Up the Colorado St. Game

San Diego State improves to 14-13 overall. The victory assures the Aztecs of their second winning regular season in the last 16 seasons, having now won as many games in the 2000-01 campaign as they have in the 66 games prior to this season when San Diego State was 14-52.

With its four conference victories this season, SDSU has had the largest MWC victory total increase over last season (SDSU +4, BYU +3 Wyoming +2, Utah 0, Colorado State -2, New Mexico -3, UNLV -3).

The Aztecs shot over 60 percent for the third time this season. All three of those times resulted in home victories. The previous two were against Oklahoma State on Dec. 30 and Air Force Jan. 20.

With four league wins this season, the Aztecs have matched their conference win total of the 35 league games prior to this season. This season the Aztecs are 4-9 in MWC play and posted a 4-31 record in the 35 league games prior to this season.

The Aztecs have won 12 games at home (12-5), marking their most home wins in a single season since the 1984-85 WAC Champion and NCAA Tournament team won 12. The 12 home wins this season equal the home victory total in the 36 home games prior to this year when the Aztecs posted a 12-24 mark.

The San Diego community continues to respond to the Aztecs' improved play. In 17 regular home games this season, San Diego State is averaging 4,538 fans, for an increase of 73.3 percent. Saturday's crowd of 5,110 pushed this year's total to 77,144. Last season, the Aztecs averaged 2,618 fans for 15 home games.

RANDY HOLCOMB has scored in double figures in 25 of 27 games this season. The junior forward is ranked fifth in scoring in the league.

AL FAUX's 18 points (6-7 from the floor, two 3FGs) are good for his 14th career double-digit scoring effort.

CHRIS WALTON's 13 points is a career high. His previous best was eight vs. BYU on Feb. 12.

MICHAEL MARION's six points are a season high. He celebrated senior night with his first start of the season.

Noting the Cowboys

Wyoming ended the regular-season in a three-way tie for the Mountain West Conference title with Utah and Brigham Young. The Cowboys lost the opportunity for an outright conference championship and the top-seed in the postseason tournament with a 106-102 loss at UNLV Saturday.

Like the Aztecs, the Cowboys enter the tournament having won three of their last four games.

Wyoming is led by first-team all-Mountain West Conference selections Marcus Bailey and Josh Davis. Uche Nsonwu-Amadi earned second-team all-conference honors.

Bailey, a sophomore, averages 17.9 points and 4.3 rebounds per game this season. Davis, a junior posts a 13.1 scoring average and leads the team in rebounding at 9.3 boards per contest. Nsonwu-Amadi, also a sophomore, averages 11.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest and was named the conference newcomer of the year.

SDSU-Wyoming Series History

Thursday marks the 47th meeting between San Diego State and Wyoming, with the Cowboys owning a 28-18 series advantage. It is the third time the teams have played this season and the second time the teams will have met in an eight-day period.

The Cowboys have won four straight contests, however, the Aztecs last victory in the series came in the quarterfinal round of a conference tournament game played at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev. The Aztecs claimed a 60-57 overtime victory over the Cowboys on Mar. 3, 1998 in the Western Athletic Conference tournament.

Wyoming swept the regular-season series this year, handing the Aztecs their worst loss of the season, a 101-66 setback on Feb. 3 in Laramie. Last Thursday (Mar. 1) in Cox Arena, the Cowboys completed the sweep with a 69-62 victory over the Aztecs. Below is a closer look at those games.

Wyoming 101, San Diego State 66/February 3, 2001/Arena-Auditorium/Laramie, Wyo.

Six Cowboys scored in double figures as Wyoming claimed a 101-66 victory over San Diego State.

The game was tied at 29 with 5:27 to play in the first half, before the Cowboys went on a 14-0 run to take a 43-29 lead at intermission.

Uche Nsonwu-Amadi recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds while Marcus Bailey poured in a game-high 18 points. Myron Epps paced San Diego State with 16 points. Randy Holcomb scored only eight points, snapping a school-record streak of 18 consecutive double-digit scoring games to open a career.

Wyoming used a huge advantage on the glass, 53-26, and shot 54.5 percent from the field in the contest. The Cowboys shot 19-of-27 (70.4 percent) from the floor in the second half.

Wyoming 69, San Diego State 62/March 1, 2001/Cox Arena at Aztec Bowl/San Diego, Calif.

Wyoming used a 45-26 rebounding advantage to help defeat San Diego State 69-62 last Thursday night.

The Aztec loss overshadowed a tremendous individual performance for one San Diego State player and a career milestone for another.

Junior guard Deandre Moore, who will undergo off-season shoulder surgery, had one of the better stat lines by a Mountain West Conference player this season. Moore recorded his first double-double with 11 points, 11 assists, six rebounds and four steals.

In addition, junior forward Myron Epps became the 18th Aztec player to record 1,000 career points.

The Aztecs led 26-21 with under four minute to go in the first half, but the Cowboys ended the half on a 9-2 run to take a 30-28 lead at intermission.

San Diego State battled back and took their final lead, 36-35, with 15:06 to play. The Cowboys responded with eight straight points to take the lead for good. San Diego State drew no closer than four points the rest of the way.

Talkin' Bout A Revolution

San Diego State is still turning heads across the country with the amazing turnaround. Below is a look at some of the accomplishments for second-year head coach Steve Fisher and the 2000-01 Aztecs.

an Diego State is 14-13 this season. The 14 victories this season equal the total number of wins San Diego State had in the 66 games prior to this season. The 14 victories surpass the number of wins for the Aztecs in the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons combined and helped the Aztecs post their second winning regular season in 16 years.

The Aztecs have broken four significant losing streaks this season. In addition to snapping a 24-game conference road losing streak with a win over Air Force on Feb. 19, San Diego State opened the season by snapping a 17-game overall losing streak with a victory over UC San Diego. On Jan. 6, the Aztecs put to rest a 30-game road losing streak by defeating Loyola Marymount, 61-58. It had been 1,067 days since the Aztecs claimed a road win on Feb. 4, 1998. The Aztecs claimed their first Mountain West Conference victory, snapping a 17-game conference losing streak with the win over Air Force on Feb. 19.

Earlier this season the Aztecs won six consecutive games, tying for the fifth longest winning streak of the Division I era and the longest since the Aztecs won eight straight games in December of 1984. Prior to the streak, San Diego State had gone 109 consecutive games without a three-game winning streak.

At 14-13, San Diego State is searching for just its second winning season since the 1984-85 campaign. In 1995-96 the Aztecs finished with a 15-14 record.

The Aztecs' dramatic turnaround has carried over to the turnstiles. Attendance for the 2000-01 season is up 73.3 percent over last season.

This season the Aztecs have played before crowds of 4,000 or more 10 times after drawing only one crowd of more than 4,000 last season. Cliff Notes: The Aztecs

Under second-year coach Steve Fisher, the Aztecs continue to show remarkable progress from last season. At 14-13, the Aztecs have five more victories than their win total from the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons combined.

The Aztecs have shown improvement in every statistical category. San Diego State has started six line-ups thus far, with eight players seeing action in at least 24 of 27 games this season.

One area in which the Aztecs have been particularly solid is on defense. San Diego State has held opponents to 67.3 points per contest. More impressive has been a defensive effort that has held opponents to 42.0 percent field goal shooting on the season. As late as the final week of January, the Aztecs were 17th nationally in field-goal percentage defense.

Junior forwards Randy Holcomb and Myron Epps lead a scoring punch which has seen the Aztecs' points per game rise from 62.3 last season to 69.1 this year.

Holcomb, a transfer from L.A. City College, leads the team with a 15.6 scoring average and 6.6 rebounds per contest. On Dec. 18, Holcomb became the first Aztec player to earn Mountain West Conference Player of the Week honors and three weeks later he earned the award for the second time this season.

Epps, a two-year starter, has scored in double-figures in 18 of his last 30 games and has shot 50 percent or better from the field in 20-of-27 contests this season. The Tulare, Calif., native is averaging 11.4 ppg and 4.6 rpg, while connecting on 55.9 percent of his field goal attempts. On Thursday, Epps became the 18th player in school history to record 1,000 career points.

A pair of new guards have helped breathe life into the Aztec backcourt. Sophomore guard Deandre Moore and junior Al Faux have paid immediate dividends.

Moore, a transfer from Vanderbilt, is averaging 7.0 points and 5.1 assists, while Shoreline Junior College transfer Al Faux is third on the team in scoring at 10.4 ppg, despite average playing time of only 25.5 minutes. Faux set a school-record for three-point field goal percentage by connecting on 7-of-8 attempts from bonus distance en route to a career-high 28 points against Oklahoma State.

Senior center Marcelo Correa has connected on 59 of his 97 field-goal attempts this season (60.8 percent), while averaging 6.4 points and 3.9 rebounds. He has a team-high 29 blocked shots.

Off the bench, the Aztecs bring experience and scoring punch to the backcourt in juniors David Abramowitz and Karlo Kovacic.

Abramowitz, a two-year letterwinner, is averaging less than a turnover a game this season and has more than a 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. Kovacic, a transfer from Modesto Junior College, has hit on 38-of-104 three-point attempts for 36.5 percent. He is averaging 5.5 points per contest.

Freshmen Chris Walton and Aerick Sanders have provided valuable assistance in the post positions off the bench. Sanders, a native of Carson, Calif., was averaging 3.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per contest, before being sidelined with a foot injury. The freshman recorded 15 blocked shots this season. Walton, a San Diego product, has chipped in 3.3 points and 2.5 rebounds per contest, including a career-high 13 points and six rebounds against Colorado State on Saturday.

Would've, Could've, Should've

In addition to claiming four conference victories, San Diego State has been in an excellent position to win three other conference games.

vs. New Mexico, Jan. 8 -?San Diego State builds a 22-11 lead with eight minutes to go in the first half. The Aztecs still led 49-48 with less than 11 minutes to play before losing 75-67.

at UNLV, Jan. 27 -?The Aztecs lead by 13 points at the half before falling in overtime 82-72. San Diego State led 32:15 of the 40 minutes of regulation.

vs. Brigham Young, Feb. 12 -?San Diego State led by seven points at the half, and had the ball with a 63-62 lead with less than two minutes to play. Brigham Young won the game 69-66, despite 51.1 percent field goal shooting by the Aztecs.

vs. Wyoming, Mar. 8 -?San Diego State leads nearly the entire first half and builds a 19-10 advantage midway through the first half. The Aztecs commit a season-low nine turnovers but lose 69-62.

Better The Second Time Around

The Aztecs impressive turnaround is also evident by comparing the first and second games against conference schools.

In addition to winning three of the seven games in the second rotation, the Aztecs have improved their margin in five of the seven repeat games, with one of the declines coming in a road win at Air Force. The Aztecs have improved +93 points in the seven repeat opponents for an average improvement of +13.3 points per game.

In four of the seven games, including each of the last three, San Diego State has shown an improvement of at least 26 points over the first contest. MASH Update

San Diego State continues to be plagued by health problems, with three players missing recent games due to injuries.

Starting point guard Deandre Moore, who missed games against Brigham Young and New Mexico due to pain caused by a slight separation in his left shoulder, suffered a more significant injury Saturday night against Colorado State. The point guard suffered a full shoulder separation in the opening moments of the second half. Moore, who was already scheduled for off-season shoulder surgery prior to the game, has missed practice on Monday and Tuesday and is questionable for the MWC Tournament.

Moore originally injured his shoulder in the opening minutes of the game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Jan. 4. Although he has missed significant practice time since the injury, he has only missed three games this season.

Senior Jim Roban played in a career-high four consecutive games prior to sitting out Saturday's game. The senior did not practice on Monday due discomfort in his back. Roban, who had off-season back surgery, has played in just 10 games this season. He is probable for the tournament.

On Jan. 16, the Aztecs learned they would be without freshman Aerick Sanders for the remainder of the season due to a stress reaction in his right foot. Sanders, who had played through pain for three weeks, played in all of the first 16 games this season, averaging 3.8 points and 3.8 rebounds.

The Nation's Most Improved Team?

Not many people would argue that San Diego State is vastly improved over the squad that went 5-23 last season, but is San Diego State one of the most improved teams in the country? According to the Sagarin ratings, yes.

The Aztecs opened the season as the 262nd team with a 63.66 rating. After posting a 14-13 record, the Mar. 6th edition of the ratings had San Diego State with a 73.41 rating for 137th place.

San Diego State is one of just 13 schools that is currently 100 spots higher than its preseason ranking, and has made the fifth biggest jump among all Division I schools in the rankings.

Following is a look at the biggest jumps from the preseason Sagarin rating as compared to ratings released on Feb 27.

Improvement You Can Measure

As dramatic as this season's improvement has been, the Aztecs have made great strides during the season as well.

From the first seven games in league play to the last seven league games, the Aztecs improved their record from 1-6 to 3-4. But the improvement does not end there. San Diego State's scoring margin went from -14.0 in the first seven league games to -0.7 in the last seven conference tilts. That is an improvement of 13.3 points per game.

The Aztecs set personal bests in the most recent Mountain West Conference rotation for record, points scored, fewest points allowed, field goal percentage and rebound margin.

In San Diego State's final three games of the season, the Aztecs improved 81 points over the first three contests against the same teams. That is an average of 27.0 points against UNLV, Wyoming and Colorado State.

Overall, in seven games against conference foes, the Aztecs improved 93 points for an average improvement of 13.3 ppg.

In all games this season, the Aztecs posted revenge victories for losses from last season seven times -?New Mexico State, Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Air Force (twice), UNLV and Colorado State.

If You Win, They Will Come

The San Diego community responded to the Aztecs' improved play in nearly record numbers, resulting in the best attendance average since the 1981-82 season. In 17 regular-season home games this season, San Diego State averaged 4,528 fans, for an increase of 73.3 percent.

Last season, the Aztecs averaged 2,618 fans for 15 home games.

Equally impressive is the increase in attendance in non-conference games. Last season, the Aztecs averaged 2,133 fans per non-conference game. This season, with the non-conference season complete, the Aztecs averaged 3,838 fans for an increase of 79.9 percent.

Earlier this season, the Aztecs played before the 11th largest home crowd in school history and the second biggest crowd of the Cox Arena era when the Aztecs hosted San Diego. In fact four of the six and six of the largest 10 crowds in the history of Cox Arena have occurred this season.

San Diego State has played in front of 10 home crowds of more than 4,000 this year. Last season, the Aztecs drew over 4,000 just one time.

The Aztecs have sent the large crowds home happy this season, winning 12 of 17 games at Cox Arena.

Wired For Cox

San Diego State posted a 12-5 record in the friendly confines of Cox Arena this season. The Aztecs are 14-4 in non-conference home games during the Steve Fisher era. A marked improvement over the 2-6 mark the Aztecs posted during the 1998-99 campaign, the year prior to Fisher's arrival.

The 12-5 home record is as many wins as the Aztecs posted in the 36 home games prior to this season.

Holcomb "Sees A Different Game"

Junior forward Randy Holcomb was named to the Mountain West Conference first team and was named the newcomer of the year by The Sporting News.

The awards continued to file in for the Chicago, Ill., native when he was named a member of the United States Basketball Writers Association District 9 team. The team covers the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington. Of the 11-member team, Holcomb was one of just three non-Pac-10 players to make the squad.

Holcomb was named the conference player of the week twice this season, becoming the first Aztec player to be honored by the Mountain West Conference and the first player to be honored with the weekly award since Jason Richey earned the WAC player of the week award on Dec. 9, 1996.

Holcomb leads San Diego State in scoring with 15.6 ppg and 6.6 rpg. He has recorded double-figure scoring games in 25 of the 27 Aztec games this season.

Holcomb has recorded five double-doubles this season.

Cleaning-Up from the Free Throw Line

One area in which San Diego State struggled early on was at the free throw line. Through the first 15 games of the season, the Aztecs were 207-of-336 from the free throw line for 61.6 percent.

In the last 12 games, San Diego State has increased its free throw percentage by nearly 10 percent, connecting on 195-of-276 attempts for 70.7 percent.

For the season, the Aztecs are hitting 65.7 percent from the charity stripe. Shooting, Rebounding the Keys To Aztecs Fate

No statistic is more telling of San Diego State's fate then shooting percentage. When the Aztecs shoot better than their opponents they are 13-3 this season. When opponents shoot better than San Diego State, the Aztecs are 1-10.

Also noteworthy is the Aztecs +4.6 rebound margin in victories and -7.9 rebound margin in defeats.

Following is a comparison of San Diego State's stats in the 14 wins versus the 13 losses.

Six-Game Winning Streak Was the Longest in 17 Years

The Aztecs' six-game win streak earlier this season was the longest in 17 years and approached the school's Division I record of eight games set during the 1984-85 season.

The streak was the fifth longest in school history.

Below is a look at the longest winning streaks during the Division I era. Longest Winning Streaks (Since 1968-69) 1. 1984-85 8 games 2. 1982-83 7 games 1977-78 7 games 1971-72 7 games 5. 2000-01 6 games 1981-82 6 games 7. 1996-97 5 games 1989-90 5 games 1984-85 5 games 1981-82 5 games 1975-76 5 games 1974-75 5 games

The Future
Two more newcomers who will not play this season are transfers Tony Bland (a junior from Syracuse) and Brandon Smith (a senior-to-be from Michigan). Both players will be eligible for the 2001-02 season.
