San Diego - San Diego State (0-2) dropped its second straight game to open the season, falling to Oklahoma State, 16-2, at the Caballeros Classic in Yuma, Ariz. The Cowboys moved their season record to 2-0 with the victory.
Seven SDSU pitchers combined to give up 16 walks and two hit batters as OSU broke the game open with five-run outbursts in both the third and fourth innings. The Cowboys put up another five-spot in the seventh after a single run in the sixth. Five errors hurt the Aztec cause, although they led to only three unearned runs on the night.
Newcomers Rah-Miel Mitchell and Cody Haven accounted for four of San Diego State's seven hits with two singles apiece while freshman catcher Josh Hill contributed an double. Haven's hit in the ninth drove in a pair of consolation runs for the Aztecs. Second baseman Brian Kraft led the Cowboy attack, going 4-for-6 with a double and three RBI.
Senior lefthander Ben Julianel made his first start of the year, but did nit get out of the third inning and took the loss. OSU's Nick McCurdy went six innings to pick up his first win of the season.
The Aztecs conclude play in Yuma on Sunday morning when they take on The Citadel at 11:00 a.m. (MST).
