SAN DIEGO - The 30th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team (4-3) lost to seventh-ranked Pepperdine (5-3), 7-0, Saturday at the SDSU Tennis Courts.
Saturday's final score did not do justice to the Aztecs high level of play with competition in several matches being extremely close, two of which were against ranked opponents. SDSU's Silvia Tornier lost to Pepperdine's Ipek Senoglu, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, at No. 1 singles. Senoglu is ranked 14th nationally in singles and Tornier 59th. No. 2 singles saw the Aztecs' Whitney Wells lose, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, to the Waves' Paola Palencia. Palencia is ranked-44th in the nation. No. 3 and 4 singles also provided excitment with SDSU's Lindsey Hedberg lossing, 6-3, 6-4, in the three spot and Katja Karrento lossing, 7-6, 6-4, at the four position.
Doubles play was equally exciting with the Aztecs closest match coming in the No. 3 spot where SDSU's Erin Polowski and Julie Chidley lost 9-8 (9) to Anh Nguyen and Charlotte Vernaz.
SDSU takes some time off, not returning to the courts until Mar. 6 when it travels to cross town rival USD for a 1:30 p.m. match.
