SEATTLE - The No. 43 San Diego State men's tennis team (2-7) was unable to pull off a win against No. 7 Mississippi, losing 4-3, Saturday morning in the consolation bracket of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships held at the Seattle Tennis Club.
Although the Aztecs were unable to defeat Mississippi, they came very close to the upset. No. 66 Oliver Maiberger of SDSU did pull off a huge upset by defeating No. 11 Alexander Hartman of Mississippi at the No. 1 singles position, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. He improves to 5-2 on the year. San Diego State seniors Adam Webster and Shawn Hiatt also won at the five and six positions, respectively.
After the three wins the Aztecs only needed one more to come away with the match. No. 58 Valentino Pest of SDSU was defeated No. 79 James Shortall of Mississippi at the No. 2 position, 6-4, 6-3. SDSU's Travis Hasson and Matt Bere both lost their matches in three sets at the No. 3 and 4 positions. The Aztecs were also unable to win a match in doubles action.
The Aztecs lost to UCLA Thursday in the first round of competition, 4-0, and then lost to Virginia Commonwealth, 4-2, in consolation action. They next play Saturday, Feb. 24 at No. 18 Pepperdine 12:00 p.m.
