Box Score

San Diego - Texas Tech starter Brandon Roberson struck out 14 Aztecs in a complete-game effort as the Red Raiders downed San Diego State, 9-1, Saturday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The game was played as part of the San Diego Classic and drew 1,076 fans, SDSU's largest home crowd of the season.

Roberson improved his record to 2-1 on the year as he scattered six hits over nine innings and gave up only one walk. His one mistake came in the seventh when San Diego State's Ben Leuthard connected with a fastball and drove it some 450 feet over the left field for his (and SDSU's) first home run of the season.

Texas Tech (8-5) was led offensively by the hitting of shortstop Gera Alvarez (3-for-4, 2 doubles, 2 RBI) and third baseman Nick Blankenship (2-for-5, double, 3 RBI). Right Fielder Kerry Hodges also contributed a solo home run, his second of the season.

Leuthard was the lone Aztec to record more than one hit, going 2-for-2 with the home run. With the loss, SDSU fell below the .500 mark at 4-5 on the year.

San Diego State redshirt freshman right-hander Rob Harrand (1-1) took the loss, giving up five runs on five hits. The Aztecs used a total of six pitchers on the night, and lost one hurler when senior Ben Julianel rolled his ankle while covering first base after just entering the game.

In the day's other games at Tony Gwynn Stadium, Oregon State defeated UC Riverside, 18-10, and University of San Diego upended Oklahoma, 14-2, in a game called after seven innings due to the 12-run rule.

The 2001 San Diego Classic concludes its run on Sunday (Feb. 18) with Oklahoma facing Oregon State at 9:00 a.m., Texas Tech meeting USD at noon, and the host Aztecs taking on UC Riverside at 4:00 p.m.
