No. 43 SDSU Falls to No. 11 VCU At ITA National Indoors

SEATTLE - The No. 43 San Diego State men's tennis team (2-6) was unable to get revenge on No. 11 Virginia Commonwealth, losing 4-2, Friday afternoon in the first round of consolation of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships held at the Seattle Tennis Club. SDSU lost to the VCU in the first round of last year's NCAA Tournament round of 16, 4-3.

SDSU did win the doubles point for the first time in five matches, 2-1. Seniors Matt Bere and Adam Webster defeated Mattias Hoglund and Mats Norin of VCU, 8-5, at the No. 2 position. Sophomore Valentino Pest and freshman Khalid Naffa bested Fernando Sanchez and Daniel Casquero of VCU, 8-6, at the No. 3 position. Sophomore Oliver Maiberger and Travis Hasson were unable to win at No. 1.

Senior Shawn Hiatt was the only Aztec to claim a victory in singles. He defeated Hoglund, 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 6 position.

The Aztecs lost to UCLA Thursday in the first round of competition, 4-0. They will play Mississippi in the consolation bracket Saturday at 8:00 a.m. at the Seattle Tennis Club.
