Men's Golf Opens Season

The 12-ranked San Diego State men's golf team will begin the season with two weeks of competition in Hawaii. The first week the Aztecs will compete at the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate in Waikoloa, Hawaii, Feb. 15-17, and the second week they will compete at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Honolulu, Feb. 21-23.

The Taylor Made
Several of the nations top collegiate teams and individuals will compete in the 11th annual Taylor Made Intercollegiate Invitational Golf Tournament, Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 15-17, at the Waikoloa Kings' and Beach Golf Courses.

The teams include second-ranked Georgia Tech, Texas (4), USC (10), San Diego State (12), Brigham Young (15), Texas Christian (19), Oklahoma (22), Pepperdine (29), Southern Methodist (33), Arizona State (36), Oregon (38), Nevada (42), Arkansas, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, CSU-Bakersfield, Hawaii, Oregon State, Rhode Island, San Francisco, Texas A&M and Washington.

The Kings' is a 6,594-yard, par-72 Scottish Links course designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish. The Beach is a 6,566-yard, par-70 resort course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

Aztecs At The Buick Invitational
San Diego State sophomore John Lieber and graduate assistant coach Magnus Carlsson both competed at last week's Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines.

Lieber finished the qualifying rounds 11-over-par with a 155 (81-74). Carlsson finished eight over with a 152 (76-76).

Lieber and Carlsson earned a chance to compete at the Buick by being the top two finshers at the amateur qualifying round held in October at Torrey Pines. Carlsson shot a 3-under-par 69 to win the qualifying. Lieber earned the second qualifier spot with a 70 after a two-hole playoff with state amateur champion Nick Jones of USC.

The Fall Recap
The Aztecs enjoyed a ranking as high as fifth in the nation according to the Golfweek magazine poll. The team won two titles in five tournaments. They won the Pacific Invite by finishing 19-under-par (281-279-285-845). The Aztecs completed the fall with a win a the Aztec Invitational, shooting an 870, 18-under-par. They also placed second in two tournaments.
