Cota Named MWC Baseball Player Of The Week

San Diego - Aztec junior second baseman Carlo Cota has been named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for his effort in the Aztecs' three-game series vs. Houston last weekend.

Cota, from Calexico, Calif. (Calexico HS) went 5-for-11 (.455) with seven RBI and two doubles while leading San Diego State to a pair of victories over the Cougars. He went 3-for-5 and drove in four runs in SDSU's 13-7 loss on Feb. 10, followed by a 2-for-4 performance with two RBI in the Aztecs' 5-4 win on Feb. 11. In that game, Cota doubled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning to bring SDSU back from a 3-1 deficit.. After Houston tied the game in the eighth, he singled in the game-winner with the bases loaded in the ninth.

On the year, Cota leads the Aztec in hitting with a .429 average and nine RBI. He also leads the squad with nine hits and three doubles.

San Diego State enters the week with a record of 3-3 as it prepares to host the ninth annual San Diego Classic at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Classic gets underway on Thursday, Feb. 15, with Texas Tech meeting UC Riverside at 2:00 p.m. The Aztecs will face Oregon State at 6:00 p.m. that same evening.
