SDSU's Maiberger Defeats Defending National Champ

Feb. 11, 2001

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 43 San Diego State men's tennis team (2-4) lost to top-ranked Stanford, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

SDSU sophomore Oliver Maiberger defeated defending national champion Alex Kim, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. The win snapped a 17-match winning streak for Kim, who won the ITA National Indoor Championships last weekend.

Maiberger also teamed with junior Travis Hasson to upset Kim and K.J. Hippensteel, 9-8, but it was not enough to win the doubles point. The win improves Maiberger and Hasson's record to 9-2 on the year.

The Aztecs claimed one more victory at the No. 3 singles position. Senior Matt Bere turned in a solid win over No. 43 Scotty Scott, 6-3, 6-3.

San Diego State is next in action at the National Team Indoors in Seattle on Feb. 15-18. The Aztecs will play their first-round against UCLA, Thursday at 12:00 p.m.
