Feb. 10, 2001

SAN DIEGO - The No. 6 San Diego State women's water polo team (1-1) had a disappointing loss to Cal Baptist this morning at the UCSD Arena No Grip Women's Water Polo Invitational, 4-3. They redeemed themselves in their second game with a victory over UC Irvine, 10-6.

Freshman Aztec standout Holly Hartzell scored her first SDSU career goal against Cal Baptist. She only had one goal that game but she scored five against UC Irvine in the second game. Hartzell also recorded two steals against Cal Baptist.

SDSU's remaining two goals against Cal Baptist were scored by sophomore Amber Prestegard. Sophomore Casey Finnegan recorded four steals. Junior goalie Heather Styles had eight saves in the goal while freshman goalie Ashley Zabel recorded three.

Kelly Falcone and Heidi Matsumoto each scored one goal, and Prestegard scored two to go along with Hartzell's five against Irvine. Sophomore Jackie Lopez also had an impressive game with three steals. Styles had nine saves and Zabel recorded three.

"We came out very poorly in the first game," said head coach Carin Crawford. "The first game jitters were very apparent. However, we came out to play in the second game and that is exactly what we did."

The Aztecs continue in the consolation round robin bracket on Sunday. They will play UCSD at 8:30 a.m. and UC Irvine at 4:30 p.m.
