San Diego - The University of Houston jumped out to seven-run lead after two innings and never looked back, going on to defeat San Diego State, 13-7, at Tony Gwynn Stadium Saturday evening. The win pushed the Cougars over the .500 mark at 3-2 while the Aztecs fell to 2-3 on the year.
The sloppily-played affair saw a total of 11 errors committed by the two teams (five by UH, six by SDSU) as Houston was able to flex more offensive muscle in the high-scoring contest.
San Diego State starter Ben Julianel was unable to record an out in the first inning, giving up three runs as he suffered his second loss in two appearances this season. Freshman Mike Moat did not fare much better in relief of the senior lefty, allowing seven runs in his three-plus innings including a pair of home runs in UH's four-run second.
Cougar starter Bryan Harris picked up his second victory of the 2001 campaign, throwing five innings and giving up three runs (one earned) while striking out six.
Junior second baseman Carlo Cota and freshman outfielder Anthony Gwynn were the offensive stars for SDSU. Cota went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBI while Gwynn had a pair of singles and three runs scored.
Houstons first four hitters accounted for 10 of the Cougars' 13 hits on the night with three each by designated hitter Josh Snook (3-for-4) and left fielder Gabe Lucas (3-for-5, 3 RBI). Snook drove in a pair of runs with a two-run homer while catcher Chris Snyder added a solo blast.
Houston and San Diego State conclude their three-game series on Sunday, Feb. 12), at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
