Softball Kicks Off Season In Long Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The San Diego State softball team (1-0) got its 2001 season underway Friday with a 2-1 victory over Illinois-Chicago (1-1) at the Long Beach State Invitational.

SDSU's win came in the top of the eighth with international tie-breaking rules in effect. Redshirt freshman Shannon Flynn started at second base and moved to third on a sacrafice bunt by junior Sarah Hershman. Junior Tiffany Goudy singled to center to score Flynn.

In the bottom of the eighth UIC loaded the bases with only one out but the Aztecs were able to retire the final two batters to seal the win.

SDSU senior Sandra Durazo (1-0) picked up the win earning four strikeouts and allowing five hits.

The Aztec's second game of the day against UC Riverside was suspended after six innings with the score tied, 2-2. The game will resume at 8 a.m. tomorrow.

Following the completion of today's suspended game the Aztecs will again face Illinois-Chicago at 9 a.m. before meeting Long Beach State at 3 p.m.
