FARMERS BRANCH, Texas - San Diego State tennis player Valentino Pest advanced to the second round of the Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships after defeating eighth-seed Shuon Madden of Texas A&M Thursday afternoon.
Sophomore Pest upset Madden, 6-3, 6-0. Madden is a senior All-American and has been ranked as high as No. 2 in the country during his career. Pest will face the winner of a first round match between Cornell's Mike Halperin and Indiana State's Stefan Hirn in Friday's second round.
Pest, the third Aztec men's player to participate at the Rolex in singles, is the first to reach the second round.
The Rolex National Intercollegiates feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including qualifiers from ITA Regional Championships held across the country during the fall. Pest qualified for the Rolex by winning the ITA Mountain Region singles title in Las Vegas last October.
