SAN DIEGO - The 27th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team (1-0) got its 2001 season off on the right foot Saturday defeating 70th-ranked Pacific 7-0 at the SDSU Tennis Courts.
The Aztecs won five of six singles matches in straight sets with sophomore Silvia Tornier kicking the rally off in the No. 1 spot with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Pacific junior Susanne Bertel.
The singles match-up of SDSU sophomore Katja Karrento and Pacific junior Christiane Barthel proved exciting with Barthel winning the first game in a 10-7 tie breaker only to see Karrento rally back, 6-2, 6-3.
All three doubles matches were won in straight sets by SDSU with the No. 1 Aztec pair of senior Whitney Wells and Karrento starting things off, 8-6.
The Aztecs return to action tomorrow at 10 a.m. when they face 63rd-ranked Rice at the SDSU Courts.
