No. 19 San Diego State Upset By No. 46 New Mexico State

Jan. 27, 2001

San Diego, Calif.- The San Diego State men's tennis team (0-1) lost its first dual match of the season to New Mexico State, 4-3.

Sophomore Oliver Maiberger is off to another good start this year after going 23-1 in dual match play last season. Maiberger defeated Alvaro Dominguez, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 2 singles position. The Aztecs were also victorious at the No. 4 and 6 singles positions.

Aztec junior Khalid Naffa won a three-set match at the No. 6 singles position (6-1, 3-6, 6-3) to tie the score 3-3 and force the match to be decided by the doubles point. Unfortunately, SDSU was unable to claim a win in any of the doubles matches.

"I give them (NMSU) a lot of credit," said head coach John Nelson. "They really came after us and came to win. Some of our guys weren't prepared for it and it showed."

The Aztecs are back in action tomorrow against Nevada at 1:30 p.m. at the SDSU Tennis Courts.
