San Diego St. Falls To BYU, 79-50

PROVO, Utah (AP) - Terrell Lyday scored 24 points to lead Brigham Young to a 79-50 pasting of San Diego State on Saturday.

BYU (12-4 overall, 1-0 Mountain West Conference) hit nine of their 10 shots in the second half, including five 3-pointers to build a 64-34 lead with 13:52 to play.

Randy Holcomb led San Diego State (10-5, 0-2) with 13 points.

Trent Whiting chipped in 17 points for BYU as the Cougars opened Mountain West Conference play with a convincing win. BYU also tied a school record with 13 three-pointers.

Lyday and Whiting hit a combined 10-of-14 3-point shots, and were 5-of-5 in the second half.

San Diego State fell to 0-2 in conference play, and is still looking for its first-ever Mountain West Conference win. The Aztecs were 0-14 last season, conference's first year.

Saturday's game was the 11th time this season BYU has held an opponent below 70 points. BYU is 11-0 in those games. BYU shot 51 percent from the field, the fourth time this season the Cougars have shot better than 50 percent.

Holcomb - who was the conference player of the week last week - came into the game averaging 17.7 points per game, but scored only 5 points on 4 shots in the second half.

BYU center Mekeli Wesley had 10 points and a season-high 5 assists.

Only one player from either team logged more than 26 minutes in the blowout, as both coaches went to their bench in the second half. San Diego State committed only 10 fouls and BYU attempted a season-low 4 free throws.
