SAN DIEGO (AP) - Matt Delzell hit a 3-pointer and made two free throws with seconds to go, leading San Diego to a 55-52 win Saturday over aSn Diego State.

Delzell's 3-pointer with 2:57 remaining broke a tie at 48, and his two free throws with 9.3 seconds left gave the Toreros a 55-52 lead. San Diego State's Al Faux shot an air ball on an off-balanced 3-point attempt at the buzzer.

San Diego (6-1) won its fifth straight, equaling its best start since 1993-94. The Toreros also beat their crosstown rivals for the 10th time in 12 games.

San Diego State (4-3), coming off a triple-overtime loss at UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday, shot only 28 percent from the field in the second half.

The Aztecs, who led 29-27 at halftime, were still close late in the game because of Faux. The junior college transfer, starting his first game of the season, scored 11 straight points late in the second half.

Faux hit two free throws to tie the game at 48 and he cut the San Diego lead to 51-50 with another pair of free throws with 2:41 left.

But Faux also committed a crucial mistake with San Diego State trailing 53-52. As he drove to the basket, Faux lost control of the ball out of bounds with 10.5 seconds left.

Delzell and Andre Laws each scored 10 points for the Toreros, who made just 33.9 percent of its field goals, but outrebounded San Diego State 50-30.

Faux and Randy Holcomb scored 13 points apiece to lead the Aztecs.
