Seventh-ranked University of San Diego got a pair of goals from Eric Wunderle and went on to defeat San Diego State, 2-0, in a game played at Torero Stadium Tuesday evening. The match was the season finale for the Aztecs (6-12-1) while USD (14-1-2) has one regular-season contest remaining.
Wunderle's first strike came just before halftime when he headed a free kick from teammate Sy Reeves past Aztec goalkeeper Brian Barnes. His second goal came midway through the second half when his 15-yard shot eluded SDSU's Tim Edwards who had come on at the break.
USD's second goal came just after SDSU's Ryan Curtis received his second yellow card of the game, reducing the Aztecs to 10 men for the final 20 minutes of the contest.
The Toreros outshot San Diego State 20-10 on the night with 14 of those attempts coming in the first half. USD's Justin Neerhof recorded his sixth shutout of the season while making five saves.
San Diego goalie Brian Barnes recorded five saves during his 45 minutes of action to finish the season with a new Aztec single-season record of 90. The old record of 89 saves in a season had been shared by current SDSU assistant Matt Hall and former goalie Bryan Finnerty.
