San Diego - San Diego State celebrated Senior Night and its final home match of the season with a 3-1 (15-9, 15-7, 12-15, 15-5) victory over visiting Wyoming in Peterson Gym Saturday evening.
The win raised the Aztecs' season record to 17-13 overall while the Cowgirls fell to 10-21 on the season. SDSU's final 9-5 mark in Mountain West Conference play means they finish fourth in the final standings and will have the number-four seed at next week's MWC Tournament in Fort Collins, Colo. Wyoming's 2-12 conference ledger means they finish seventh and will be seeded as such at the tourney.
San Diego State's victory also marked the 100th career coaching win for Aztec head coach Mark Warner. The sixth-year mentor now has a 100-81 record during his tenure at SDSU.
Both teams struggled through the early portion of the match, with the Aztecs breaking a 6-6 tie in game one with a run of six points to take a 12-6 lead. SDSU closed out the match on a pair of hitting errors by the Cowgirls.
Game two saw Wyoming jump out to a 7-4 lead, only to have San Diego State run off 11 straight points to win the contest. Two blocking points and a pair of kills from senior Amy Hallquist provided the final four points for SDSU.
After falling in game three, a seesaw affair, the Aztec stormed back in game four behind the hitting of Hallquist, senior hitter Monet Solberg and freshman Aspen McPartland. Hallquist led the Aztecs with 14 kills while McPartland contributed 10.
Senior middle blocker Erin Grady finished the night with eight total blocks, nine kills, and a .467 hitting percentage. In addition, defensive specialist Jessica Allen had seven kills from the back row along with three service aces.
Wyoming'sJamie Burke led all players with 15 kills with teammate Melody Friehauf contributing 11 kills and a .308 hitting percentage.
The Aztecs begin play at the conference tournament on Thursday, Nov. 16, against either New Mexico or UNLV.
