LAS VEGAS - Junior forward Kim Rogers and freshman defender Rebecca Prilaman each scored their first goals of the season in San Diego State's 3-0 win over New Mexico in the quarter-finals of the Mountain West Conference tournament in Las Vegas on Wednesday.
The third-seeded Aztecs (8-12 overall) controlled the game from start to finish, but they were unable to get on the board until Rogers punched in a cross from sophomore defender Hannah Garl at the 30:41 mark. The Lobos (7-12 overall) battled for the remainder of the first half, but after Jane Specht headed in a corner kick from Fay deLeon just six minutes into the second half, it was clear that SDSU would advance to the semi-final round of the MWC tournament.
Prilaman put the exclamation point on the win at the 72:46 mark when she scored on a first time shot after a cross from midfielder Nikki Torruella.
Aztec goalkeeper and first-team all-MWC selection Linnea Quinones held New Mexico scoreless for the second time this season en route to guiding SDSU to its fourth straight win over the Lobos.
The Aztecs will take on second-seeded Utah at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow at UNLV's Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Utes downed Wyoming, 4-0 in their opening round matchup on Wednesday.
When SDSU and Utah met earlier in the season, the Utes handed the Aztecs a 2-0 loss in Salt Lake City. The Aztecs' Kim Castellanos, a first-team all-MWC selection as well as the MWC Freshman of the Year, missed the match with a sprained ankle. She will be in the lineup on Thursday. With a healthy Castellos on the field, the Aztecs have compiled a perfect 5-0 record against conference opponents this season.
