SAN DIEGO - Highly-touted freshman forward Kim Castellanos turned in her finest performance at the collegiate level in San Diego State's 2-1 win over Wyoming at the SDSU Sports Deck on Sunday.
The Rancho Bernardo HS product scored both of the Aztecs' goals, and nearly scored a third in leading SDSU to its second straight win.
The Aztecs (5-9-0 overall, 2-0-0 Mountain West Conference) fell behind early when Cowgirl forward Katrina Morton intercepted a bad clearance from the SDSU defense and put it into the upper left-hand corner of the net at the 18:09 mark. Following Morton's goal, the Aztecs took complete control of the game.
Castellanos tied the game in the 35th minute when she headed in a corner kick taken by Fay deLeon from the right side, then scored the game-winner in the 60th minute when she placed a 23-yard blast into the net from the left side with a Wyoming defender in her face.
Although the Aztecs only won the game by one goal, the score did not reflect how thoroughly SDSU dominated the Cowgirls (6-5-1 overall, 0-2-0 MWC). The Aztecs outshot Wyoming, 19-5, with Castellanos taking 10 of those shots. SDSU took 10 corners compared to the Cowgirls' two and kept the action on the Wyoming side all game.
The Aztecs take their perfect conference record into Provo, Utah next week when they take on 17th-ranked Brigham Young (10-3-1 overall, 2-0-0 MWC) at 6 p.m. on Thursday in a rematch of last year's MWC championship game. SDSU will then head to Salt Lake City to take on Utah (7-6-1 overall, 1-1-0 MWC) at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
