San Diego State Golf Team Claims Pacific Title

STOCKTON, Calif. - The San Diego State men's golf team, ranked 21st nationally, won the championship of the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif., on Tuesday. SDSU posted a three-round total of 845, (19-under), including a three-under 285 on Tuesday, to top Alabama-Birmingham by five shots.

Scott Piercy led the Aztec charge. His three-round total of 210 (71-68-71) was good enough for third place in the individual competition. J.R. Ruda of Cal shot a 207 to take medalist honors.

All five Aztecs finished among the top 25 individuals. Lars Johansson finished tied for seventh (214), John Lieber was 10th at 215, John Lepak was 14th with a 216 and Brian Miller shot a 219 to finish 24th.

SDSU opened the tournament with rounds of 281 and 279, the two best 18-hole scores by any squad in the 17-team field. Four of SDSU's five players recorded at least one round in the 60s, including the 68 by Piercy on Monday. SDSU's 19-under was the best performance by the Aztecs since the program was reinstated in 1992.
