San Diego - San Diego State got a goal from sophomore Alan Fielder midway through the first half, and made it stand up as the Aztecs recorded a 1-0 win over visiting UNLV at the SDSU Sports Deck Sunday afternoon. The victory snapped a streak of seven matches without a win for SDSU which improved to 5-11-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The Rebels, who had won nine of their last 11 entering Sunday's contest, fell to 9-7-1 (3-3 MPSF).
Fielder's goal, his second in three games, came in the 27th minute of the contest. A corner kick by Enrique Tovar was knocked on by midfielder E.T. Perry to Fiedler who turned and buried it into the left side of the net. The assist by Tovar was his team-leading sixth of the season.
The Aztecs escaped a late first-half flurry when a shot by UNLV's Jason Melendez was cleared off the line by senior defender Tim Lebold after an initial close-range attempt by Tuomas Talvio was saved by Aztec goalkeeper Tim Edwards. Rebel midfielder Alejandro Hernandez also had a shot hit the crossbar in the first half.
The second half turned into a physical affair with a total of 25 fouls whistled by the referee. On the day, UNLV committed 21 fouls to 18 by San Diego State.
The Aztecs had a pair of good chances to increase their lead after the break. E.T. Perry's close-range shot was smothered by Rebel goalie Robert Ackah, and later Mike Klotovich saw his lob shot beat Ackah only to be cleared off the line by midfielder Michael Meek. Ackah was credited with three saves while SDSU's Edwards had five.
San Diego State concludes its home season with a conference match against UC Irvine next Sunday, Nov. 5 at 2:00 p.m. at the SDSU Sports Deck. The Aztecs end the season with a match at crosstown rival University of San Diego on Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 7:00 p.m.
