San Diego - San Diego State needed four games to dispatch a stubborn New Mexico side as it defeated the Lobos 15-8, 15-4, 15-17, 15-9 Saturday evening in Albuquerque. The win was the third straight and ninth in the last 11 matches for the Aztecs who improved to 15-11 overall and 7-4 in Mountain West Conference play. The victory snapped a short two-game win streak for the Lobos who fell to 8-12 (4-6 MWC).
Five Aztecs finished the match in double figures in kills led by sophomore Nicole Akporiaye with 14. Senior Monet Solberg and Amy Hallquist recorded 13 kills apiece while Erin Grady and Aspen McPartland each contributed a dozen.
San Diego State hit .227 as a team over the four-games, including a .389 percentage in game two when it seemingly took control of the match. However, New Mexico battled back to win game three, to force a fourth game which the Aztec captured to win the match. The Lobos were led by Jessie Goffard, who led all players with 18 kills, and Micaela Conley who had 13 kills.
SDSU's Melissa Wright had 50 assists in the game and has moved into eighth place on the SDSU career assist list even though she is in only her first season as an Aztec. The transfer from Washington State now has 1,066 assists this season. However, that total is just short of cracking the single-season top 10, with the 10th spot held by Andrea Clark with 1,078 (in 1997).
Up next for San Diego State is a meeting with conference foe UNLV on Saturday, November 4, at 7:00 p.m. in Peterson Gym. The Aztecs close out their home season by hosting Colorado State and Wyoming the following weekend before heading the Colorado Springs for the conference Tournament November 16-18.
