SAN DIEGO (AP) - Dexter Wynn returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and had a 66-yard return to set up another score as Colorado State beat San Diego State 34-22 on Saturday night.
The Rams (7-1, 4-0 Mountain West) won their fifth straight game to stay atop the conference standings, recording 233 yards on five kickoff returns and 65 yards on three punt returns.
San Diego State (2-6, 2-2) closed to 31-17 at the half with two quick scores. Ricky Sharp returned an interception 57 yards for a TD, and Lon Sheriff threw a 64-yard TD pass to Derrick Lewis.
Sheriff passed for 396 yards and one TD, completing 30 of 46 attempts. Matt Newton was 21-of-33 for 228 yards and one TD for Colorado State.
Wynn, a redshirt freshman who entered the game with no kickoff returns, initially bobbled the ball, but recovered to break loose at midfield on his 100-yard return, which tied the school record.
The play is the longest kickoff return ever in the second-year conference. Wynn's two returns for 166 yards set another conference mark for kickoff return yardage.
On his second return, Wynn advanced to the San Diego State 34 Nine plays later, the Rams scored on a 3-yard run by Rahsaan Sanders for a 14-3 lead late in the first quarter.
Pete Rebstock had a 57-yard punt return to set up C.W. Hurst's 37-yard field goal that made it 24-3.
Rebstock, who had all three punt returns for the Rams, later threw a 4-yard TD pass to Rick Crowell out of a field-goal formation with 56 seconds left in the half.
The Rams increased their lead to 34-17 on Hurst's 30-yard field goal with 1:33 left in the third quarter.
San Diego State was stopped at the Rams' 1 with 1:31 left in the game. Colorado State then took a safety from punt formation in the closing seconds.
