San Diego - New Mexico, playing a man short, scored the game-winning goal with 15 seconds left in regulation and defeated San Diego State 2-1 in a game played in Albuquerque Friday evening. The loss left the Aztecs with a season record of 4-11-1 (0-4-1 MPSF) while New Mexico improved to 6-10 (3-2 MPSF).
The Aztecs got on the board first when Enrique Tovar converted a penalty kick awarded after a trip in the box. It was Tovar's team-leading fourth goal of the season and came in just the seventh minute of the contest. At the same time, UNM senior forward Alan Watson was given a red card for arguing the call leading to the penalty, and the Lobos found themselves facing a short-handed situation for the remainder of the game.
New Mexico came back to tie the game some 10 minute later when Javier Carrasco found George creamer with a pass which Creamer knocked off the cross bar and into the goal.
The game appeared head to overtime before a late counter attack saw Erik Cronkite bring the ball up field and pass to Alejandro Gonzales who slotted in the game-winner at 89:45.
Both teams created 11 shots on the night with SDSU's Brian Barnes and UNM's Mark Johnson each making four saves.
Up next for San Diego State is an MPSF match with UNLV on Sunday, Oct. 29, at 1:00 p.m. at the SDSU Sports Deck.
