SAN DIEGO - In a rematch of a game played earlier this season, the San Diego State men's soccer team fell to 10-man Cal State Northridge, 2-1, Friday evening in Northridge. The loss dropped the Aztecs to 4-10 (0-3 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) on the season while the Matadors got their first MPSF victory to improve to 5-9 overall and 1-3 in league play.
San Diego State opened the scoring in the 10th minute of the game when sophomore Alan Fiedler took a pass from teammate Brett Lasby and put the ball past CSN goalkeeper Christian Perez. However, Northridge came back to tie the contest when William Diaz converted a penalty kick 30 minutes into the game.
For the seocnd time this season, the Aztecs and Matadors played a physical contest thet saw four SDSU players receive yellow cards. But it was CSN's Tony Ortega who was shown the red card in the 37th minute as the Matadors played the rest of the night with 10 men.
Northridge's winning goal came in the 52nd minute of the game when Cesar Martinez scored with an assist from Junior Palacios.
The game was evenly contested with the Aztecs outshooting the Matadors by a 15-14 margin. Both goalkeepers (SDSU's Brian Barnes and CSN's Perez) recorded four saves over the course of the 90 minutes.
San Diego State continues its current MPSF road swing with a game at UC Santa Barbara Sunday afternoon.
