SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's soccer team won a crucial Mountain West Conference match at the Sports Deck on Friday, defeating New Mexico, 4-0.
Freshman forward Kim Castellanos (Rancho Bernardo HS) led the Aztec charge, recording her first collegiate hat trick in the match. Castellanos got things going early, beating Lobo goalkeeper Shelly Hammock at the 4:52 mark after two quick shots from Castellanos and Fay deLeon had Hammock sprawling out of position. Castellanos added a second in the 20th minute when she blasted a shot into the net from the left side. She completed her hat trick in the 53rd minute when she blistered a highlight-reel caliber shot from straight away.
Not to be outdone, deLeon added yet another goal at the 75:16 mark, sending a low shot into the left corner of the net from 18 yards out. deLeon finished the game with a goal and two assists. Her two assists on Friday moved her out of a tie for fourth on the SDSU career assist chart with former regional All-American Shawn Viloria. deLeon now stands alone in third behind only Lori LaCoursiere and Catherine McGuire with 20 assists in her career.
The Aztecs (6-11 overall, 3-2 MWC) thoroughly dominated the match, outshooting the Lobos (7-10 overall, 2-4 MWC), 25-2. deLeon led the way with 7 shots, while Castellanos added six. SDSU goalkeeper Linnea Qui?ones recorded her second shutout of the season, playing just over 57 minutes before being substituted for Erin Haentjens.
The Aztecs' four goals was their highest output since Oct. 24 of last season, when they beat UNLV, 4-0. Castellanos' hat trick was the fifth in SDSU history and the first since Megan Mattes accomplished the feat last year against the Lobos in Albuqerque. The 25 shots taken by the Aztecs marked the highest single-game shot total of the season, and the highest shot total for SDSU since Nov. 4, 1998, when the Aztecs peppered Texas Christian with 25 in the second round of the 1998 Western Athletic Conference tournament.
SDSU returns to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday when it hosts UNLV at the Sports Deck in a crucial MWC matchup. Seniors Elicia Petre, Tina Atwood and Heidi Hornsveld will be honored just before the game starts, as they will be playing in their final home match for SDSU. If the Aztecs win or tie the match, they will secure the third seed in the upcoming MWC tournament to be played Nov. 1-4 in Las Vegas. If SDSU gets the third seed, it would not have to face 15th-ranked Brigham Young until the final match of the tournament.
