Oct. 17, 2000

Box Score

San Diego - San Diego State needed five games to subdue an inspired UC Riverside team as it defeated the Highlanders 15-6, 15-7, 7-15, 13-15, 15-12 Tuesday evening in Riverside. It was SDSU's second five-game match in their last four outings after it had gone through its first 18 matches with none.

The Aztecs (12-10) got off to a quick start, winning the first two games and making it appear that the match would be a quick one. However, UCR (2-15) grabbed the momentum in game three behind the hitting of Allison Donald and Pam Hartman, and they carried it into the fourth game.

In game five, the Highlanders took an early 6-3 advantage, but a pair of service aces by SDSU's Amy Hallquist shifted the momentum, and SDSU came back to tie the game at 10-10. The Aztecs took a 12-10 lead, but UCR cut the advantage to 13-12 before SDSU finished the match on kills by Hallquist and Monet Solberg.

Aspen McPartland led all players with 17 kills and 13 digs in the match while hitting .314 on the night. Hallquist, Solberg and Nicole Akporiaye each had 14 kills apiece to help the Aztec cause. Senior Erin Grady, who ranks second in the NCAA in blocks per game, tallied one solo and seven blocks assists for SDSU.

San Diego State returns to conference action at home on Friday, Oct. 20, when it takes on 16th-ranked Brigham Young at Peterson Gym at 7:00 p.m. The Aztecs then face 18th-ranked Utah the following night (Oct. 21), again at 7:00 p.m. in Peterson Gym
