Volleyball Defeats William & Mary

SAN DIEGO - In a match filled with momentum swings, the San Diego State Aztec women's volleyball team came through when it counted most, and defeated visiting William & Mary by game scores of 15-9, 15--4 and 15-13 Friday evening in Peterson Gym. The win took the Aztecs (11-10) above the .500 mark for the second time this season while the Tribe dropped to 10-9.

San Diego State opened game one with a run of 12 straight points behind the hitting of senior Monet Solberg and Amy Hallquist. However, the Tribe mounted a comeback effort to close with 13-8 before succumbing.

Game two was all San Diego State as it raced out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back. However, game three was a different story as William & Mary rallied to take a 12-8 lead before SDSU battled back with the blocking of senior Erin Grady and hitting of Aspen McPartland, After the Aztecs took a 14-12 lead, the Tribe tied the game at 14-all before San Diego State secured the final two points on an ace by Zlatina Anguelova and a block by Grady.

Solberg led all players with a dozen kills on the night while Grady contributed nine kills, seven total blocks, and a .750 hitting percentage for the match.

The Tribe was led by Stacy Woodson's 10 kills, but the team struggled offensively, hitting just .081 for the match compared to SDSU's .271.

The Aztecs continue their break from Mountain West Conference action when they travel to UC Riverside tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 17) to meet the Highlanders at 7:00 p.m. SDSU returns home this weekend to host MWC foes Brigham Young and Utah on Friday and Saturday respectively.
