Strong Showing From Qui?ones Not Enough For Aztecs

Box Score

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State goalkeeper Linnea Qui?ones recorded a career-high 11 saves, but her effort wasn't enough to push the Aztecs to a victory over Utah on Saturday, as the Utes defeated SDSU, 2-0 in Salt Lake City.

Qui?ones and the Aztecs (5-11-0 overall, 2-2-0 Mountain West Conference) held Utah (9-6-1 overall, 2-2 MWC) scoreless in the first half, despite the fact that the Utes sprayed Qui?ones with nine shots in the opening stanza. However, in the 59th minute, Utah forward Amy Kofoed got the Utes on the board when she hammered a shot into the lower left-hand corner of the net.

Ute forward Shauna Gurr put the game away in the 89th minute, when she collected a rebound after Qui?ones saved a shot taken by Utah's Katie Tate and calmly put it away.

Saturday's loss to the Utes put SDSU in a tie for third place with Utah in the Mountain West Conference standings with two conference matches to go. The Utes, however, have the upper hand on head-to-head.

The Aztecs wrap up the conference season at home next week when they take on New Mexico at 1 p.m. on Friday and UNLV at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Both games will be played at the Sports Deck, with Sunday's match being highlighted by a ceremony to honor SDSU's senior class in their final game in front of their home crowd.
