Aztecs Fall To Utes, 21-7

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Darnell Arceneaux threw three touchdown passes as Utah beat San Diego State 21-7 on Saturday.

Arceneaux connected with Steve Smith for touchdowns of 74 and 69 yards, and also threw a 16-yarder to Cliff Russell. The 74-yarder to Smith and Russell's touchdown came on the Utes' first two possessions of the game.

Utah (2-4, 1-1 Mountain West) limited San Diego State to 250 yards of total offense. San Diego State (1-5, 1-1) drove into Utah territory just three times.

Larry Ned scored the Aztecs' only points on a 5-yard run early in the fourth quarter. Lon Sheriff's 29-yard pass to J.R. Tolver, San Diego State's longest play, set up Ned's score.

Arceneaux completed 12 of 17 passes for 230 yards and threw two interceptions. Adam Tate rushed for 104 yards on 26 carries.

Sheriff was just 15 of 39 passing for 157 yards and was sacked four times. After completing his first pass of the game, Sheriff threw 10 consecutive incomplete passes.

Smith broke three tackles as he turned a short pass into a 74-yard touchdown play as the Utes took a 7-0 lead on their first possession.

On Utah's next possession, Arceneaux lofted the ball into the corner of the end zone and Russell outjumped two defenders to pull in the 16-yard scoring pass.

Arceneaux's 69-yard TD pass to Smith iced the game with 3:56 left.
