SAN DIEGO -
A golden goal at the 92:10 mark by Harvard's Katie Westfall propelled Harvard to a 1-0 win over the San Diego State women's soccer team at the SDSU Sports Deck on Sunday.
Westfall scored from about 18 yards out after a cross was sent into the area from the left side by Joey Yenne to give the Crimson (4-2-0 overall) the win.
The Aztecs (3-9-0 overall) battled all game long and had a pair of quality chances to score in regulation, but were unable to cash them in. Just before halftime, SDSU forward Kim Rogers got free inside the box and was one-on-one with Harvard goalkeeper Cheryl Gunther, but sent her shot over the bar. The second half provided a chance as well, as Aztec midfielder Jane Specht got past the defense but was unable to finish the open look.
The Crimson also got a good scoring chance in the first half, when following a corner kick taken by Orly Ripmaster, Westfall took a shot that beat SDSU goalkeeper Linnea Qui?ones but was saved off the line by Aztec midfielder Elicia Petre.
SDSU will look to bounce back when it opens Mountain West Conference play at 1 p.m. on Friday when it takes on Air Force at the Sports Deck. The Aztecs have never lost a game to the Falcons, and beat them twice last year (once in regular-season play and once in the MWC Tournament). Things should begin to look up for SDSU once conference play begins, as the Aztecs have compiled a 16-6-1 record against Mountain West Conference opponents all-time.
