San Diego - The San Diego State men's soccer team got goals from Ryan Ivkovich and Enrique Tovar, then held on for a 2-1 won over Cal State Nortrhridge in a rough, physical contest at the SDSU Sports Deck Tuesday afternoon. The win improved the Aztecs' record to 4-5 while the Matadors fell to 4-4.
The game saw a total of 39 fouls between the two sides as the referee issued eight yellow cards and three reds over the course of the 90 minutes.
After a scoreless first half, SDSU opened the scoring in the 53rd minute. Ronnie Silva crossed the ball to Travis Baker who took a shot from just outside the top right side of the box. The shot cut across the face of the goal where Ivkovich used a nice back heel to re-direct it past Matador goalkeeper Christian Perez.
The Aztecs doubled their advantage seven minutes later when SDSU goalie Brian Barnes' punt was collected by Tovar behind the CSN defense. The junior from San Jose calmly chipped the ball over the onrushing Perez to give SDSU a 2-0 lead.
The ill-tempered play of the contest came to a head in the 75th minute when SDSU's Ronnie Silva and Northridge's Aaron Benditson were red-carded after an altercation. Some eight minutes later, Aztec Jon Povey received a second yellow card and was ordered off the field.
With a man advantage, Northridge pressed for a goal and were rewarded in the 89th minute when Stephen Raynor's low cross from the left found Nick Pince unmarked in front of the goal for an easy tap in.
The Matadors had 14 shots during the contest, five of which were on goal as SDSU's Barnes made four saves. Five of SDSU's nine shots were on goal as Perez was called upon to make three saves for Northridge.
Up next for San Diego State is this weekend's tournament at UNLV where they will face Louisville on Friday evening (Sept. 29) and Drury on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 30). The Aztecs return home to the SDSU Sports Deck on Oct. 6 to face Cal State Fullerton in their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener at 4 p.m.
