SAN DIEGO - A first-half goal by freshman forward Kim Castellanos lifted the San Diego State women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Long Beach State at the SDSU Sports Deck on Sunday.
Castellanos, who scored the game-winner when she struck the ball from 18 yards out off a pass from midfielder Becky Prilaman, helped the Aztecs snap a six-game losing streak. Fay deLeon, who was credited with the second assist on the goal, tied former teammate Kelly Grogg for fourth on the SDSU all-time career assist chart with her 17th. The win was the first shutout of the year for the Aztecs.
SDSU (3-7-0 overall) controlled the action in the first half, outshooting the 49ers (3-5-1 overall, 0-1-0 Big West), 10-5. However, Long Beach State came back hard in the second half, controlling the tempo and putting itself in a position to tie with under 10 minutes remaining. With time winding down, 49er midfielder Lacy Brown took a long shot that was deflected by Aztec goalkeeper Erin Haentjens. The rebound rolled to Long Beach State forward Marcia Rewoldt, who hammered a shot that Haenjens made a diving save on. Following Haentjens' spectacular save, the ball found its way to the 49ers' Ali Efstratis, who shot it over the bar, ending the threat.
The win broke SDSU out of the longest losing streak in school history, and improved the Aztecs' record to 2-0 all-time against Long Beach State.
SDSU returns to action at 3 p.m. on Thursday when it hosts Pepperdine at the Sports Deck.
