Sept. 22, 2000
Massachusetts scored the game-winning goal with under three minutes left and went on to defeat San Diego State 2-1 Friday night. The game was played in Tempe, Ariz, in tempertures in the 90-degree range in spite of the 7:00 p.m. start.
The loss was SDSU's sixth in a row and dropped their season record to 2-7. The Minutemen evened their 2000 slate at 4-4.
Massachusetts got on the scoreboard first when Kava Ciocca took a cross from Brooke Bartlett and slipped the ball past Aztec goalkeeper Linnea Quinones at 11:02.
San Diego State answered in the 40th minute when Fay deLeon's corner kick was met by a Jane Specht header that eluded the UMass keeper. It was Specht's first goal of the season.
The Aztecs dominated play over much of the remainder of the game, but were unable to convert their chances as they outshot UMass 14-9 on the night. The Mintumen's winning goal came at 87:30 when a shot was well-saved by Quinones only to rebound off the crossbar to UMass' Amy Mink who slotted the ball home from close range.
The game was the last of seven straight road contests for the Aztecs after they had opened with two home games in late August. The team now returns home to face Long Beach State on Sunday, September 24, at 1:00 p.m. at the SDSU Sports Deck.
