San Diego - A goal by Claudio Basaez in the 111th minute lifted Loyola Marymount to a 1-0 overtime win over San Diego State in Los Angeles Saturday afternoon. The game was the final contest of the LMU Fall Classic, won by San Jose State. SDSU finished with Loyola-Chicago placing fourth.
The win improved Loyola Marymount's record to 5-3-0 on the season. San Diego State fell to 3-5-0 as it saw its short two-game winning streak ended.
The match was an evenly contested affair with the Lions outshooting LMU 30-26 on the afternoon. SDSU was the aggressor in the first half, taking 12 shots to Loyola Marymount's six. In the second half, LMU turned the tables, taking 16 shots to the Aztecs' nine.
SDSU sophomore goalkeeper Brian Barnes made several big saves in the second half to preserve the 0-0 scoreline. SDSU's Mike Klotovich had a chance for the Aztecs in the dying second of regulation, but pulled his shot wide left with only the LMU goalie to beat.
The game-winning goal began with midfielder Spencer Reeves brining the ball down the right side before sending a cross to forward Arturo Torres near the top of the box. Torres picked out Basaez in the box who fired a shot that beat Barnes and settled in the bottom right corner of the net.
Both goalkeepers had busy afternoons, with Barnes making eight saves on the day and LMU keeper Jared Bailey recording 14.
Next up for the Aztecs is a date with Cal State Northridge on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 4:00 p.m. at the SDSU Sports Deck.
